Job Description
Reporting to the Chief Graphics Designer, the job holder will be responsible for transforming data into visually appealing, engaging and understandable graphics, charts, and interactive visualizations that enhance storytelling and news reporting.
He/She will work with reporters, designers and editors to create data-driven stories that engages readers and presents information in an easily understandable and concise manner.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with journalists to understand the story objectives and identify relevant data sources;
- Analyzing large data sets to identify patterns, trends, and insights that can be effectively represented visually to improve our news coverage;
- Creating captivating visual representations of data using various techniques such as charts, graphs, infographics, maps, and interactive dashboards based on audience needs;
- Data organization; Work closely and collaboratively with journalists, designers, and editors to integrate data visualizations seamlessly into news stories;
- Diagnostic Analytics that involves content analysis;
- Ensuring the
accuracy and integrity of the data used in visualizations through data cleansing, preprocessing, and validation;
- Designing interactive and user-friendly visualizations that enable users to explore and interact with the data;
- Developing news stories that help communicate the key findings and insights derived from the data visualizations in a clear and captivating manner;
- Support data-driven journalism initiatives by providing expertise in data analysis, visualization, and storytelling techniques and training journalists and newsroom staff in basic data visualization principles to enhance their data literacy skills.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Data Journalism, Computer Science, or a related field;
- Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in a position of similar complexity.
- Demonstrating proficiency in data visualization software tools such as Excel, Tableau, Power BI, D3.js, Python libraries (Matplotlib, Seaborn), or other relevant tools;
- Solid understanding of statistical concepts and data analysis techniques;
- Knowledge of data governance and data protection laws;
- Storytelling skills and ability to convey complex information through visualizations;
- Familiarity with data sourcing, data scraping, and data cleaning techniques is a plus;
- Attention to detail and a commitment to data accuracy and integrity;
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
